Updated October 2026. Opening dates below are the resorts’ announced targets for the 2026–27 season, and they always depend on snow. We’ll keep this post current as dates firm up.
Quick answer: Heavenly is scheduled to open for the 2026–27 ski season on Friday, November 20, 2026, the first South Lake Tahoe resort on the calendar. Kirkwood follows on Friday, December 4, and Sierra-at-Tahoe opens when conditions allow. Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, and the free Heavenly Village tree lighting is the next night, Friday, November 27. All dates are weather-dependent.
November in South Lake Tahoe smells like woodsmoke and cold pine. The summer crowds are gone, the lake turns a deep steel blue, and the first dusting of snow shows up on the peaks above town. Then, sometime around Thanksgiving, the snow guns roar to life on Heavenly and the whole basin wakes back up.
Those few weeks between the quiet and the first chair are some of our favorite in Tahoe. Here’s what to expect in November 2026, when the lifts are set to open, and how to plan a trip that feels restful instead of rushed.

When Does Heavenly Open for the 2026–27 Season?
Heavenly is scheduled to open on Friday, November 20, 2026, according to Visit Lake Tahoe’s 2026/27 resort guide. Vail Resorts set the same target for Northstar on the north shore. Incline Together’s roundup of 2026–27 opening dates lists the same day, and it’s a good reminder that every date on these lists depends on natural snowfall, temperatures, and snowmaking.
Early-season terrain is usually limited, so treat opening week as a warm-up, not the full mountain.
Our tip: Heavenly is keeping its reservation-based parking for winter 2026–27, per Visit Lake Tahoe. If you’re driving to the California base area on a weekend or holiday, reserve your spot before you load the car.

Which South Lake Tahoe Ski Resorts Open First?
On the South Shore, here’s the order for 2026–27 as announced in October:
- Heavenly: Friday, November 20 (target).
- Kirkwood: Friday, December 4 (target). Kirkwood sits south of the lake off Highway 88 and is continuing reservation-based parking.
- Sierra-at-Tahoe: “When conditions allow,” with Visit Lake Tahoe projecting late November or early December. The resort is marking its 80th season, and it’s adding weekend and holiday parking reservations that are free for passholders and for cars carrying four or more people.
If you’re flexible and on the Ikon Pass, Palisades Tahoe is targeting Wednesday, November 25, the day before Thanksgiving. It’s on the north side of the lake, so plan for a longer drive.

What Is South Lake Tahoe Like in November Before the Lifts Open?
Quiet, crisp, and honestly underrated. According to Visit Lake Tahoe, November highs hover around 50°F with nights dropping to about 25°F, and South Lake usually sees four to seven snow days in the month. It’s sweater weather by day and fireplace weather by night.
A few ways to spend the pre-ski weeks:
- Walk to the lake on the Lam Watah Nature Trail. It’s a 2.8-mile trail near Stateline that ends at Nevada Beach, where you can have the sand nearly to yourself.
- Visit Emerald Bay before the storms. California State Parks says you can hike down to Vikingsholm any time of year, but tours ended September 30 and there’s no drinking water or services from October to May. Snow and ice make the trail hazardous in winter, and Highway 89 at Emerald Bay can close during storms.
- Hike early in the month. Lake Tahoe Travel Tips notes that Forest Service facilities at the Eagle Falls trailhead close for the season on November 15.
Our tip: Build in one slow day with nothing on the calendar. A long breakfast, a walk by the water, and a nap by the fire is the wholehearted reset most of us actually came for.

Do You Need Chains to Drive to Tahoe in November?
You need to carry them, and you may need to put them on. Caltrans uses three levels of chain control:
- R1: Chains required, except passenger cars and light trucks with snow tires on at least two drive wheels.
- R2: Chains required, except four-wheel or all-wheel drive vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels. Those vehicles must still carry chains.
- R3: Chains required on all vehicles, no exceptions. Highways often close before R3 is posted.
Before you head up Highway 50 or 89, check Caltrans QuickMap or call 800-427-7623 for live conditions. Over Thanksgiving week, Lake Tahoe Travel Tips warns that I-80 and US-50 traffic is heaviest on Wednesday and Sunday, so a Tuesday arrival or Monday departure can save you hours.

What’s Happening in South Lake Tahoe Over Thanksgiving 2026?
Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26. The next evening, Heavenly Village lights its 65-foot holiday tree, kicking off the Heavenly Holidays Family Festival, which runs through December. The tree lighting is free. Visit Lake Tahoe hadn’t posted a start time when we checked, and Lake Tahoe Travel Tips lists it at 6:30 p.m. After that night, the tree lights up daily at 5:30 p.m. through Christmas, often with Santa.
Many lakeside restaurants and resorts serve Thanksgiving dinners, and the popular seatings fill up. Lake Tahoe Travel Tips keeps a 2026 list with prices. Book now if you’d rather not cook.

Where to Stay in South Lake Tahoe for Early Ski Season
For a November or opening-week trip, we think the best base is a house with space to spread out: room to dry gear, a kitchen for a slow Thanksgiving, and a quiet street to come home to after a day in the cold.
Our modern 4-bedroom chalet near Lake Baron in South Lake Tahoe was made for exactly that. It’s in town, so Heavenly is a drive across South Lake rather than over a pass, and the lake is close for those slow pre-ski mornings. When you book direct with us, you’re talking to the people who take care of the house, not a call center.
